The History Behind Three Popular Christmas Traditions

How does your family celebrate Christmas? Do you decorate a Christmas tree and hang lights from the house? Do you sing Christmas carols and cook a festive feast for the family? With Christmas just a couple days away, Your Lake Vacation thought it would be fun to share the history behind some of the United States' most popular Christmas traditions!

1. Decorating Christmas Trees.

Long before the advent of Christianity, plants and trees that remained green all winter had a special meaning for people. In ancient times, people hung evergreen boughs over their doors and windows to keep away witches, ghosts, evil spirits, and illness. The Christmas tree as we know it is actually credited to 16th century Germany, when devout Christians brought decorated trees into their homes. The first record of a Christmas tree on display in the United States was in the 1830s by the German settlers of Pennsylvania. However, they were seen as pagan symbols and not accepted by most Americans, as late as the 1840s. By the 1890s, Christmas ornaments were being imported from Germany and Christmas tree popularity was on the rise around the United States. With the creation of Christmas lights, Christmas trees began to appear in town squares across the country and having a Christmas tree in the home became an American tradition.

2. Sending Out Christmas Cards.

The tradition of sending out Christmas cards was started in the United Kingdom by Sir Henry Cole. He was a civil servant who had helped setup the new Public Record Office (what we now call the Post Office). He wondered how it could be used more by ordinary people. His friend John Horsley, an artist, designed and sold the first Christmas card. Less than 1,000 of his cards were printed and sold. In 1840, Sir Henry Cole helped establish the first Penny Post, which allowed the public to send mail. In the 1860s, after printing processes had improved, Christmas cards became much more popular and were produced in large numbers. By the early 1900s, the custom had spread over Europe and had become especially popular in Germany. While Christmas cards appeared in the United States in the late 1840s, they too expensive for most people to afford. In 1915, John C. Hall and two of his brothers created Hallmark Cards, one of the biggest card makers still today!

3. Believing in Santa Claus.

The original St. Nicholas, or Santa Claus, was a bishop in 4th century Turkey. He was a very rich and kind man, helping the poor and giving secret gifts to those in need. In Northern Europe during the 16th century, the stories and traditions of St. Nicholas became unpopular. However, someone needed to deliver presents to the children. Therefore, in the UK, he became known as Father Christmas or Old Man Christmas. In some countries the present giver became known as "Christkind," a golden-haired baby with wings, symbolizing the new born baby Jesus. In the early United States, "Christkind" became Kris Kringle. Eventually, Dutch settlers brought the stories of St. Nichols and combined, St. Nick and Kris Kringle became "Sinterklaas," now known as Santa Claus. Over the years, the United Kingdowm's Father Christmas and the American Santa Claus became more and more alike, and are now one and the same.

What Can I Do to Improve My Rentals?

PhotoCredit: FunLake.com
It's that time of year when the rentals have slowed down and you can take a moment and reflect on the past rental season. Thanks to the marketing campaign of the Tri-County Lodging Association and the Convention and Visitors Bureau, along with the entire Lake of the Ozarks, many of us here at the Lake enjoyed one of the best summers and rental seasons of all time! Our Lake of the Ozarks vacation rental company had the best year in our 30 year history! Using the "Best Recreational Lake in the United States" has been awesome for business here at the Lake of the Ozarks and we should continue to mine that for all its worth!

Using the Slow Season to Your Advantage

Over the next six months, we only bring in 6% of our annual income; however, in that same time period, we will book about 60% of all our business for the 2017 season! We try to use this slower time to our advantage. This is the time when we can take a look at our properties and see if there is anything that can be improved. We take a look at properties that need painting, new furnishings or if they need to get a flat screen TV, WiFi or other amenity that will help them rent their property.

The Importance of WiFi in Your Rental

One of the biggest factors that we can see from this past season is that people want and need to be connected. Looking at our rentals from this past season our properties that have WiFi available averaged 45.58 paid nights, while the properties that didn't have WiFi (six of them) averaged 26.17 paid nights. Even within the same complex, we had two units with WiFi which averaged 50.5 nights and two units without WiFi (which otherwise are just as nice) averaging 20 nights.

Some of our owners don't want to pay for the extra expense. the cost is around $600 per year for WiFi, but they are giving up about $2,500 in income. So you have to ask yourself, do I want to save $600 or make an extra $1,900? To me, it is a no brainer, but for some it seems to be a tough choice.

The Importance of Keyless Entry

A few years ago, when we were switching our properties over to keyless entry, I had a few owners that didn't want to pay for the new locks. So I told one owner that didn't really want the lock that I would charge him for the lock, but at the end of the summer if he didn't like it, I would refund all of his money and put his old lock back on. But if he liked it, he would buy me lunch. Even before the summer was over, I received a gift card in the mail for $25! So take stock of what you are doing and use this slower time to your advantage!

How to Carve Your Thanksgiving Turkey

With Thanksgiving tomorrow, many of you are preparing to gather with family and friends for a delicious feast. Whether you're traveling to visit others or hosting Thanksgiving at your house, turkey is sure to be on the table. In today's blog, Your Lake Vacation offers several tips and tricks for when you're ready to carve that turkey.

How to Carve a Turkey

If you've never carved a turkey before or you just need a quick refresher, check out this video from Food Network:

Turkey Carving Tips

1. Let the Turkey Rest. Once the turkey is done cooking, you want to let it sit for at least 15 minutes before you start carving it. This allows time for the juices to redistribute and make the entire turkey more tender. You'll also be less likely to burn yourself by letting it cool a little before cutting it apart.

2. Place the Turkey on a Carving Board. One of the first mistakes that many people make is trying to carve the turkey in the pan that it was cooked in. To keep the turkey from sliding around and to keep the pan from getting in your way, take the turkey out and place it on a kitchen towel on a cutting board.

3. Use a Knife and Some Tongs. Turkeys can be difficult to carve, so grab a trusty pair of tongs to use in conjunction with a large, sharp knife. The tongs will help you keep the turkey in place as you are cutting with the knife. You can also use a carving fork instead of tongs if you prefer. As for the knife, sharp 10-inch slicing knife would be a good choice, as a serrated blade will tear the meat.

4. Cut Across the Grain. For maximum tenderness, you want to cut the turkey across the grain. You also want to follow the shape of the muscle to avoid wasting any meat.

Happy Thanksgiving from your premier vacation rental company at the Lake of the Ozarks! We hope these tips help you easily carve that turkey for everyone to enjoy tomorrow. For those of you that are planning to travel for Christmas, don't forget we have great rental options for any size family or group. 5 Pumpkin Carving Tips

One of the most popular Halloween traditions is pumpkin carving. While some people like to cut a simple jack-o-lantern face into their pumpkin, others carve elaborate designs into theirs. With Halloween just a few days away, we thought we would offer you a few pumpkin carving tips.

1. Choose the Perfect Pumpkin.

You want to make sure your pumpkin is fresh. If you bought it at the beginning of the month and it has been sitting on your porch for awhile, it may not be the best pumpkin for carving. You also want to choose a pumpkin with no bruises, a sturdy stem and a flat bottom so it doesn't roll around. Pumpkins of lighter color have a softer flesh, making intricate designs easier to carve.

2. Cut the Top Off at an Angle.

The first step in carving a pumpkin is cutting the top off so you can get all the pulp out of the inside. When you cut the top off, you'll want to cut it at an angle rather than straight up and down. This way the lid won't fall into the pumpkin when you replace it. For this step, a boning knife works best.

3. Remove All the Pulp.

There's a lot of goop inside of a pumpkin, and before you start carving, you'll want to remove it all. While some of it will easily come out with your hand, you may want to purchase a special "claw" or an ice cream scoop to get the job done. You will get messy, so if you don't like touching the pulp, you may want to purchase some rubber gloves as well. You want to thin the wall of the pumpkin as much as you can so that it's easier to carve.

4. Start Carving Your Pumpkin.

Depending on how fancy you want to get with your design, you may want to trace the design on the pumpkin before you get started cutting. The key to safe carving is to use a sharp knife. The sharper the knife, the less force you'll need to use and the less likely the knife is to slip. For increased stability, carve out the smallest details first, then work your way up to the larger cuts. It's also a good idea to leave the cut pieces in place until you are finished cutting all the lines.

5. Use Petroleum Jelly to Keep it Fresh.

Pumpkins contain a lot of water and when you start cutting into them, they begin to lose that moisture. That's why they shrivel up after awhile. To keep your pumpkin fresh longer, spread petroleum jelly on the cut edges to seal in moisture. If your pumpkin still shrivels up a few days later, you can try to revive it by soaking it facedown in cold water for up to eight hours.

Happy Halloween weekend from Your Lake Vacation! We hope these tips come in handy when you are carving your pumpkins this weekend. Have a safe and wonderful holiday weekend! For all your upcoming getaway needs, keep our Lake of the Ozarks vacation rental company in mind!
