6 Creative Ways to Save Money for Vacation

Whether you're taking a trip to visit family over the holidays or planning a big family vacation next summer, traveling can be expensive. You have to pay for transportation, accommodations, food and entertainment for the entire time you're away. Some places are obviously more expensive than say a vacation to Lake of the Ozarks, but now is the time to start saving for whatever trip you're planning to take in the near future. Here are a few ideas on how to save up for that vacation you've been dreaming of:

1. Open a Dedicated Savings Account

Money sitting is your checking account is just asking to be spent. If you're serious about saving for that trip you've been wanting to take, open a separate savings account just for your trip fund. You can even setup and automatic transfer of a certain amount to be deposited into the account each month. This idea will also help keep you on budget when you actually start planning and paying for your trip.

2. Online Savings Account

If option #1 seems like too much work, too many trips to the bank, consider using an online savings account service like SmartyPig.com. Services like this allow you to set a goal and transfer money regularly to reach that goal. Family and friends can also contribute to your fund. Often times, these online services offer great interest rates. Do some research and see what online savings account services might work for you.

3. Start a Change Jar

Have you ever collected spare change before? You'll be amazed at the amount of money that can accumulate from those little coins.  It only takes $1.37 per day to get to $500 in a year. If you have everyone in the family emptying their pockets into the change jar, that shouldn't be hard to do. Encourage your children to start saving this way as well.

4. Begin a Monthly Budget

Many people don't even realize where all of their hard earned paycheck is going each month. By starting a budget, you can see exactly where your money is going and how you might be able to cut back on some of those expenses. Do you really need to eat out 3 times a week or could you save some money by preparing something at home? How many shopping sprees did you go on for new clothes, movies, toys, etc. last month? See where you can afford to cut back and set that amount back for your travel fund.

5. Sell Unwanted Stuff

If you like to travel, use the philosophy that life is about experiences, not stuff. This is especially true when you can turn that unused stuff into cold, hard cash. Try having a garage sale and keep an eye out for city-wide garage sale weekends. You can also sell  your stuff in Facebook garage sale groups or on eBay. You never know what someone else could be looking for that you could be selling to them.

6. Pick Up a Side Job

Working a little harder right now could really be worth it if you get to relax on a nice long vacation. Look for ways to earn money outside of your regular job, such as babysitting or serving. Consider short-term work opportunities as well; many retail places hire seasonal workers for the holidays. Working these side jobs may mean sacrificing your weekends for awhile, but it will help make your vacation possible.

Planning a vacation can be fun! Depending on when you're planning to travel, Your Lake Vacation has some great deals on Lake of the Ozarks accommodations during the off-season. We can also hook you up with golf packages and offer suggestions of other activities to enjoy during your stay. 7 Road Trip Games to Pass the Time

The fall season is a great time of year for a weekend road trip to the Lake of the Ozarks! One of the great things about road trips is that it offers a time for family bonding. With all the technology today, it's easy to get disconnected and out of touch with your family. Use this road trip experience to take the time to set down the electronics and play one of these family-fun road trip games:

1. The License Plate Game

With this game, the goal is to "collect" license plates from different states. You want to be the person to find the most states in a certain period of time. You can make it even tougher by going in alphabetical order. Another variation of the game is using the letters on a license plate to come up with a word that has all the letters in it. For example, if the license plate numbers is DE8Y2A, you could use the word "Daytime."

2. The Alphabet Game

For this game, you'll want to utilize road signs, billboards, shop names, and anything else you can see outside the vehicle with letters on it. The point is to find every letter in the alphabet, in alphabetical order, before everyone else in the car. For example, if you see a sign that says Apple Orchard 2 miles ahead, there's your "A." Then you'll look for something with the letter "B," for example Exit 127 B. Continue looking for the rest of the letters in order. The first person to the letter "Z" wins!

3. Name That Tune

As you could probably guess, the point of this game is to be the first person to figure out the "mystery tune." If you have people in the car that can sing, you might rotate singing songs, while everyone else tries to guess the tune. Otherwise, you might be better off using the songs that come on the radio. The first person to guess the song correctly wins. For an extra challenge, try humming or whistling the songs instead of singing!

4. 20 Questions

To avoid being asked, "Are we there yet?" 20 thousand times, use this game to expand the conversation. Whoever goes first has to pick something, anything really. Then the other players get 20 questions to help them figure out what that something is. The trick, the questions have to have a yes or no answer only; no open ended questions are allowed!

5. Padiddle

If you're traveling after dark, this is a great game to play! The term "padiddle" is slang for a vehicle with a burnt-out headlight or brake light. When you spot a vehicle with one of its lights out, you hit the ceiling of the vehicle and yell "Padiddle." If you're the last person to do it, you lose.

6. The Picnic Game

This is a game to test everyone's memory. You can start the story however you like, such as, "I'm going on a picnic and I'm bringing..." or "I'm going into space and I am taking..." Whoever goes first starts the story and picks something to bring along that starts with the letter A. The next person has to repeat what the first person said and then add an item starting with the letter B, and so on and so forth.

7. I Spy

The classic game of I Spy is a great way to pass the time on a road trip. If you don't already know how to play, one person picks an object that the others will have to guess. The person that picks the object says, "I spy with my little eye, something..." and then either states the color of the object or the first letter of it.  Whoever guesses the object correctly gets to go next!

If you live in Missouri or any of the surrounding states, you're probably less than a day's drive to Central Missouri's vacation destination spot. Since the prime season is already over, you won't have to fight the crowds to see the sights. To start planning your vacation today, give us a call at 877-284-0267! From one bedroom condos up to five bedroom houses, we have vacation rentals at the Lake of the Ozarks to fit any size group. Your Lake Vacation is here to make all of your vacation planning a breeze!
