19 Holiday Shopping Fun Facts and Statistics

Each year, on December 25th, people across the country celebrate Christmas. One of the main traditions associated with this holiday is gift giving, and that means shopping during the holiday season increases. In today's blog, Your Lake Vacation thought it would be fun to take a look at some of the facts and statistics surrounding holiday shopping. Where do you fit into these numbers this year?

Holiday Shopping Stats

1. For the 2017 holiday season, 73.5% of shoppers plan to spend about the same amount of money on Christmas as they did last year. In addition, 14.6% plan to spend more than last year.

2. In 2016, consumers spent a total of $655.8 billion on holiday spending (sales in November & December). Holiday sales for 2017 are expected to increase by between 3.6-4% over 2016 sales.

3. Compared to 2016, this year's e-commerce sales during the holiday season are expected to increase by 16.6%. E-commerce's share of total retail sales this season is estimated at 11.5%.

4. In 2017, roughly 72.1% of consumers plan to look for gifts on Amazon. Amazon's share of e-commerce sales this year is estimated to reach 34% compared to 30% last year.

5. According to a consumer survey, approximately 41% of people completed all, or the majority of, their holiday shopping online in 2016. That number is sure to increase with the 2017 season.

6. When choosing where to shop, consumers plan to spread their holiday shopping out across a variety of options. Of those options, 59% of consumers choose to shop online, 57% choose departments stores and 25% choose local, small businesses.

7. When it comes to holiday shopping, 48% of consumers said free shipping and shipping promotions are key factors in purchasing from a retailer.

8. According to a survey from NRF, consumers plan to spend a total of $967 this holiday season. Of that total, $608 is spent on gifts for family, friends and coworkers, $218 on other holiday purchases like candy, food and decorations, and $141 on other non-gift purchases for themselves and their families.

9. The top factors that determine where people will do their holiday shopping this year include sales and price discounts, followed by quality and selection of merchandise, and then free shipping. According to 73% of consumers, sales and price discounts are most important when determining whether or not to shop at a particular retailer.

10. As of early November, 56% of consumers had already started their holiday shopping this year. However, only 12% were more than halfway done by then.

11. When it comes to giving back during the holiday season, 73% of consumers plan on engaging in a charitable activity this year. Over 7 in 10 consumers plan to either donate items or financially contribute to a charity or cause, while 2 in 10 plan to do so by purchasing from retailers that support a cause.

12. During the holiday season, 80% of people plan to spend time with family and friends.

13. The holiday tradition of gift giving will be celebrated by roughly 63% of people.

14. When it comes to holiday cooking, 50% of people plan to make a special meal or festive treats this season.

15. Only 45% of consumers plan to decorate their home or yard this year for the holidays.

16. In 2016, Barbie topped the toy wish list for girls, while Legos topped the list for boys.

17. For the 2017 holiday season, 6 in 10 holiday shoppers plan to purchase clothing and accessories and gift cards.

18. Those consumers purchasing gift cards this season plan to buy an average of 4 gift cards, worth roughly $45 each. Total gift card spending this holiday season is expected to reach $27.6 billion.

19. In 2017, more than 174 million Americans shopped in stores and online during the 5-day Thanksgiving holiday weekend. The most popular day for in-store shopping, of course, was Black Friday, followed by Small Business Saturday.

Located on the 28 mile marker of the main channel, Old Matt's Cabin features 3 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms. This private waterfront cabin at the Lake of the Ozarks is just down the road from Seven Springs Winery and Big Surf Waterpark. The entrance to the home affords parking for up to 5 vehicles; this includes a car port in front of the home. The main floor features the kitchen with all the conveniences of home, and the living room with plenty of seating, a flatscreen TV, and DVD player. Understanding the Rental Season at the Lake of the Ozarks

At the Lake of the Ozarks, we experience a very short rental season. Many potential Lake of the Ozarks vacation rental owners are very surprised when they find out that about 85% of their rentals will occur between Memorial Day and Labor Day each year. Thus, the other 15% occur during the other nine months of the year. Owner of Your Lake Vacation, Russell Burdette states, "I had one potential owner call me and he wanted to know if he could expect 300 rental nights per year. I told him that if I could rent our properties for 300 nights each year that I would have retired a long time ago."

Maximizing Your In-Season Rentals

When you have a limited rental season, such as the one at the Lake of the Ozarks, what can you do to increase your rental nights? You have to absolutely maximize your in season rental nights and then look at ways to attract rentals in the off-season as well. How do you maximize your summer rentals? The first, most important thing you can do is limit the number of nights you use the property yourself during peak season. Be smart about when you use it and don't reserve all the holidays for yourself. On smaller homes and condos at the Lake of the Ozarks, you are mostly going to get weekend rentals. Therefore, you want to avoid using your property on the weekends or use it on the slower weekends when it possibly will sit empty. Typically, the first two weekends in June and the last two in August are the slowest due to school schedules.

The second thing you can do is set a minimum night requirement during the peak season and stick to it as long as you can. You don't want to book a two night rental for a weekend in July now because you could have the opportunity to book a 4-7 night rental instead. If it's two days prior to the weekend, take the rental, but don't book small rentals at the beginning of the year. There are only so many good weekends available during the summer season at the Lake of the Ozarks. Those weekends typically include every weekend in July and the first weekend in August. Those are the absolute prime weekends. Therefore, you will want to get maximum nights and maximum price for those weekends.

Off-Season Rentals

How about maximizing rentals prior to Memorial Day Weekend and after Labor Day Weekend? Most rentals will have seasonal pricing where the spring, fall and winter rates are lower than the summer rates. Beyond that, you can create packages of pay for so many nights and get a free night or some other type of discount. Just keep in mind that most guests can only stay 2-4 nights during the off-season. One additional way to attract off-season rentals is to offer something different, such as a hot tub, game room, indoor pool, tickets to a show, mall discounts, restaurant discounts, gift cards, golf discounts, etc. Something that sets you apart from other rentals or that adds value to the rental is key to renting your Lake of the Ozarks home or condo during the off-season. If the price is the same, but you are offering additional discounts or amenities, then you'll probably get the rental over other similar units.

Christmas carols will also fill the air while you gaze at the beautiful Christmas light displays, and of course Santa, will also be making an appearance as well! Bluegrass Martins Christmas Concert - December 9-10

The Martin's will perform their first-ever Christmas themed show at the Royal Theatre in Versailles. All tickets are $15 and the show starts at 7pm each night.

Children's Christmas Play - December 10

Polar Express Movie Screening - December 10

This popular Tom Hanks movie will be screened on 12/10/16 at the Wehrenberg Theatre in Lake Ozark, MO. Lake Ozark Christmas Parade - December 10

Celebrate the season with at the Annual Christmas parade along the Historic Bagnell Dam Strip from 3pm - 5pm. Immediately following the parade, Santa will greet kids and families for a bonfire at the top of the Bagnell Dam Strip at Two Bit Town! There will be treats for the kids, hot chocolate, coffee and refreshments, Christmas music and caroling and also the Parade Float winners will be announced!

Christmas for Kids - December 10

Enjoy an evening of entertainment with hors d’oeuvres, a cash bar and a silent auction at The Lodge of Four Seasons, while supporting Lake Area families in need this holiday season. Investing in Vacation Property at Lake of the Ozarks

So far in 2016, we've gotten a ton of calls from investors looking at vacation rental properties at the Lake of the Ozarks. In light of all the people currently looking at investment property, Your Lake Vacation has decided to revise an earlier blog on investing in a vacation rental home. Before you make your home purchase, talk to a professional at our property management company to make sure you know what you're in for!

Investment Perspective

By investing in a vacation rental property, the owner can do two things: off-set some of the property expenses like the mortgage, taxes, insurance, etc. and also use the Lake of the Ozarks home or condo as a vacation property for their own family and friends. When it comes to owning a vacation rental property, having the proper perspective will make all the difference in your experience. Very few properties will completely pay for themselves through the rental income. So if you can't afford any added expenses to what you already have, you're probably better off not buying. However, if you are just looking to off-set some of your expenses (and I would say in most cases at least half of your total expenses would normally be covered by your rental income), then you will have a positive experience.

Return on Investment

When it comes to investments, most people are interested in the return they'll be getting from it. Let's look at the basics when it comes to getting a return at the Lake of the Ozarks. Keep in mind that our vacation rental season, compared to coastal locations, is relatively short. At the Lake, we're looking at around 90 days for the season and depending on the type of property, you might only get weekend rentals for the most part. There are only 15 weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day. However, if you have a nice property in a great location, you'll get a few rentals outside of the prime season too. Just keep in mind that 80% of your rentals will fall within that 90 day period.

Running the Numbers

For an example, let's look at a 2-bedroom condo at the Lake of the Ozarks. The average selling price right now for a 2-bedroom waterfront condo in the Osage Beach area is still right around $123,000. Based on a 30 year mortgage at 4.5% interest and a 20% downpayment, your monthly payments would come out around $490. A typical, nice 2-bedroom condo rents for around $175 per night in the summer. You can expect around 40 summer nights and around 10 off-season nights (in the $140 per night range). That gives you around $8,400 for the season. Your average cost is going be somewhere around $11,000 for the year. That total includes your mortgage, insurance, taxes, quarterly assessments and electricity. Also, over time, you will need to set aside some of your earnings to update your property, repaint, replace worn items, etc. Depending on what Lake of the Ozarks property management company you go through, you're going to give 35-40% of your rental income to them. That leaves you with around $5,000 to $5,500 in net income from rentals. Even if you manage the property yourself, you will, in most cases, come up a bit short.

If you are looking to cover some of your expenses, like your electric, insurance and taxes, then you are probably going to find the experience a lot more satisfying than if you need your rental income to cover your mortgage and assessments. Putting for Patriots at Pirate's Cove - May 27-30
Pirate's Cove Adventure Golf in Osage Beach will host the 10th Annual Putting for Patriots fundraiser from Friday, May 13 through Memorial Day. This national event will occur simultaneously at 33 miniature golf courses throughout the US. Donations will be accepted at this time, and in addition, a percentage of total sales during this time will be donated to 3 charities who service our wounded veterans, their families and survivors of the fallen.

Aaron Lewis with Special Guest Christiana - May 29
Grammy Award-nominated, multi-platinum singer, songwriter, and guitarist will be at the Ozarks Amphitheater on Sunday, May 29. Doors open at 6 pm and the show starts at 8 pm. For tickets, visit www.ozarksamp.com.

Memorial Day Weekend Fireworks Displays - May 28-29

Bear Bottom Resort will have fireworks on Saturday, May 28 at 9:45 pm. View by land at the resort or by water at the 38 MM. Parking is limited so arrive early.
Tan-Tar-A Resort will have fireworks on Sunday, May 29 from 8:30-9:30 pm. Viewing by land is only for resort guests, but you can view by water at the 26 MM.
Tropic Island Cruises allows you to view Tan-Tar-A's fireworks by water even if you don't own a boat! For reservations and details, please call 573-348-0083.
The Lodge of Four Seasons will have fireworks Sunday, May 29. A BBQ and Carnival will be held prior to the fireworks event from 6-10 pm. Cost for the event is $22 for adults and $12 for children, with children 5 and under free. You can also view the fireworks by water at the 13 MM.
Celebration Cruises allows you to view The Lodge's fireworks by water aboard their yacht. For reservations and details, please call 573-480-3212.
