About Labor Day

Labor Day in the United States is a public holiday celebrated on the first Monday of September. It honors the American labor movement and the contributions that workers have made to the strength, prosperity, laws and well-being of the country. The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City. Ten thousand workers marched in a parade from City Hall to Union Square. Following the march was a celebration with family and friends that included a picnic, concert and speeches. On June 28, 1884, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories.
