July is National Grilling Month

Did you know that July is National Grilling Month? Due to the warmer weather, the summer months are perfect for preparing and enjoying food outdoors. In honor of this month-long celebration, your favorite Lake of the Ozarks vacation rental company wanted to share with you some tips for grilling. Use them when you barbeque at the Lake of the Ozarks this summer!

Grilling Tips

Don't let improperly prepared food ruin your summer. Use these tips to ensure food safety and quality meals when grilling this summer.

  • Wash your hands before preparing any food.
  • Keep the food cold until you're ready to put it on the grill. Letting the food sit out allows bacteria to start growing.
  • Preheat your grill 15-25 minutes before you start cooking to ensure that it reaches the right temperature and to kill any bacteria that might have been left on the grill. A properly heated grill will sear food on contact, keeping the insides moist and helping to prevent sticking.
  • It's easier to remove debris when a grill is hot. Therefore, after preheating is the best time to use a long-handled wire grill brush to clean the rack of charred debris from prior meals. Scrape it again immediately after use while it's still warm.
  • Maintaining a clean grill will reduce the chances of flare-ups and incessant smoke, which can burn the outside of food and cause a bad taste.
  • Even on a clean grill, lean foods may stick when placed directly on the rack. You can reduce that likelihood by oiling your hot grill rack with a vegetable oil-soaked paper towel. Just hold it with tongs and rub it across the rack.
  • Don't mix raw and cooked foods. Keep them in separate containers and use separate utensils or wash them with soap and water in between use. Bacteria from the raw food, particularly meat, will contaminate the freshly cooked meal.
  • The best way to know if your protein is fully cooked is to check it's internal temperature with an instant-read meat thermometer.
  • Keep hot food warm to at least 140°F until ready to be placed in a cooler with ice or the refrigerator. Keep cold foods and salads chilled on ice until ready to serve, and then return them to the cooler after serving. Temperature control is key to avoid bacteria growth that can cause sickness.
  • Successful grilling means paying attention to your grill. Stepping inside to check the score of the game or to mix up a side dish for just a moment is enough time for your grill to get out of control and burn your food. Be sure to watch your grill the entire time that food is on it.
  • Have plenty of fuel available for your gas grill. You don't want to run out of propane in the middle of a barbeque with hungry people. Keep an extra fuel tank on hand. (When you stay with us, we provide an extra fuel tank at each property with a gas grill.)

The majority of our vacation rentals at the Lake of the Ozarks either have a personal grill on the deck or a public barbeque area for you to enjoy a nice meal outdoors. We hope these tips come in handy, and that you enjoy many a meals outdoors this summer season. If you haven't already booked your summer reservations with us, give us a call at 573-365-3367.

8 Things to Bring on Your Lake Vacation

When renting a vacation home or condo at the Lake of the Ozarks, what should you bring with you and what is supplied with the rental? Every vacation rental at the Lake of the Ozarks is different, so be sure to ask the right questions and check the amenities list if one is provided. At Your Lake Vacation, we try to supply most basic items so that guests don't have to worry about bringing things like paper towels, soaps, tissues, toilet paper, dishwasher tablets, etc.

Vacation Rental Yikes!

Owner Russell Burdette, went on vacation with his family in Dauphin Island, Alabama about 12 years ago or so. The home that his dad rented on the beach didn't come with much at all. In fact, they had to supply their own bedding, pillow, sheets, blankets, the whole nine yards. Trying to cram 5 kids and 2 adults, all their clothes and bedding into a mini-van with a topper was quite the sight. They never want to do that again! And we don't want our guests to do that either!

What to Bring with You

Some of the questions that we get when guests call include: does this property come with air conditioning, and does this property have sheets and pillows? We can tell that they've had some rough experiences in the past.

1. Shampoo - Many places provide soaps, but most people prefer their own shampoo.

2. Coffee - While some places may provide a small packet of coffee, most people prefer their own brand.

3. Games - You never know when it might rain on your vacation, and while some properties may have some games, it's a great idea to bring some with you to pass the time on a rainy day.

4. Music - While you used to have to lug around cassettes or cd's, now taking your favorite tunes with you is so much easier. Just load your music onto your favorite device and take it with you when you travel.

5. Beach Towels - Most vacation rentals at the Lake of the Ozarks will supply bath and hand towels for inside the property. However, if you are heading to the beach or the pool, you'll want to bring your own large beach towels.

6. First Aid Kit - While you hope you will never need it, it's always a good idea to keep a first aid kit handy when you travel in case of any accidents.

7. Small Tool Kit - Our owner always keeps a little tool kit on him. It's surprising just how many things you can fix with a good old four way screw driver and a pair of pliers.

8. Paper & a Pen - While your smart phone can perform a lot of tasks, there are still uses for good ole paper and pen. Notes to others, keeping score and tic-tac-toe are just a few!

So pack up your car with these items and your other essentials (clothes, toiletries, etc.) and head out on vacation to the Lake of the Ozarks!

Your Lake Vacation is your premier vacation rental company at the Lake of the Ozarks. Since 1986, we have helped thousands of guests with their vacation planning. Why Work with a Local Property Management Company?

In today's world, with technology at our fingertips, the way we do business (in any business) has changed dramatically. Technological advances in the vacation rental industry have changed the way we advertise, the way we market, how we gain access to properties, how we book guests, etc. We no longer have land line phones, VCR's, keys, paper contracts and we don't do bulk mailings, have phone book ads or do much, if any, print advertising. However, for us, the one thing that hasn't changed is that local, personal touch.

Vacation Rental Management

If you wanted to, you could manage your vacation rental at the Lake of the Ozarks from another state (or country), book everything online, take your digital payments (credit cards, Paypal) set up your guest entry code via computer to your keyless entry lock and all you really need is someone to clean your property. Easy! This can save you 25% to 40% in management fees, which is great, until you have a problem or your guest has a question.

What happens when the housekeeper forgets to clean your property and your next guest shows up to a dirty home or condo at the Lake of the Ozarks? What happens when the AC goes out at 11 pm at night and you don't know who to call to get it fixed, the guest wants a refund or to move to another property, and you only have one property? What happens when the home has been invaded by ants, there is a water leak, the guest cannot find the property or they don't know where to launch their boat?

Property Management Services

That is why with a local, professional vacation rental manager at the Lake of the Ozarks, you normally get all of these services as part of their management fee. Over the years, our owner has personally helped someone launch their boat at midnight because they couldn't find the boat launch. He has taken floor fans to a condo after 10 pm because the AC went out and no one could fix it until the next morning. He has battled ants in the kitchen, helped stop water leaks, communicated with guests while their power was out and helped them find their property when they arrived at 3 am after driving all night.

At Your Lake Vacation, we physically walk through each property prior to guest arrival to ensure that they are clean and working properly. We have local people answering our phones so that we can give guests accurate directions, answer questions and give suggestions on local restaurants and attractions. When there is an emergency, we are here 24/7 to help them and when the AC goes out, we have repair companies that work with us, even late at night, to help make our guests comfortable. We even have a local office in the heart of Osage Beach across from the outlet mall, which includes a visitor's center (stop in and see us) with all the latest coupon books, magazines, brochures, etc.

Your Lake Vacation is your premier vacation rental company at the Lake of the Ozarks. For more information about our property management services, give us a call at 573-365-3367. Looking to purchase a home at the Lake to put on our rental program? We can tell you what to look for and help you find the perfect home or condo for a vacation rental!
